Breast Cancer Care (Registered Charity #1017658)

The History

Breast Cancer Care was founded by Betty Westgate in 1972, four years after her own diagnosis of breast cancer in 1968. A celebrated breast cancer campaigner, Betty lived for more than 30 years following her diagnosis and passed away in 2000. At the outset, the charity was called Cancer Education Voluntary Service; the name was later changed to Breast Care and Mastectomy Association of Great Britain in 1987 and again to Breast Cancer Care in 1994.

Their Vision

We want every person affected by breast cancer to get the best treatment, information and support.

What They Do

Breast Cancer Care combine the personal experiences of people affected by breast cancer with clinical expertise, using this in a unique way to:

  • provide information and offer emotional and practical support
  • bring people affected by breast cancer together
  • campaign for improvement in standards of support and care
  • promote the importance of early detection.

How They Work

  • We focus our work on the unique experience of each individual affected by breast cancer
  • We involve people with breast cancer in all that we do
  • We use our understanding of the emotional and practical issues facing people affected by breast cancer alongside our clinical expertise

Why This Charity?

Two colleagues in the British Airways IT Department (based on the Newcastle Business Park) have suffered from, and survived, this terrible disease. They have both benefitted tremendously from the fantastic support that Breast Cancer Care gave them, so that's why this year's charity was chosen.

Sponsorship

As the aim of the event is to raise money for Breast Cancer Care, we would encourage you to download a sponsorship form and get yourself sponsored for the event. All the organisation for the event is entirely voluntary so every penny of your sponsorship money will go to the charity.
